The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially declared October 24 as the date for elections to fill four vacant Rajya Sabha seats from Jammu and Kashmir. This significant announcement was made on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, bringing an important electoral process to the region.
This upcoming election follows closely on the heels of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, which took place approximately a year ago. The Union Territory has faced a notable period without representation in the Upper House of Parliament, a situation that has persisted since February 15, 2021.
The vacancies arose when the terms of prominent members like Ghulam Nabi Azad and Nazir Ahmed Laway concluded on February 15, 2021. Shortly before that, on February 10 of the same year, Fayaz Ahmed Mir and Shamsheer Singh Manhas also completed their tenures, leaving these four critical seats empty.
Further details regarding the election process are anticipated.
