Hassan mourns the loss of a true national hero, veteran freedom fighter H.M. Shivanna, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 93 due to health complications associated with old age. His departure marks the end of an era for many who knew his unwavering spirit.
Born in Hanur, Chamarajanagara district, Shivanna relocated to Hassan early in his life, where he soon immersed himself in the fervent struggle for India’s independence. He was a prominent figure in significant historical events like the freedom movement and the ‘Mysuru Chalo’ movement, enduring imprisonment for his courageous participation. He leaves behind a loving family: his wife, two sons, and a daughter, who will continue to cherish his memory.
Even in his advanced years, Shivanna remained a beacon of activism, consistently lending his voice and presence to various pro-people movements across Hassan. He passionately engaged with college students, sharing firsthand accounts and invaluable lessons from the freedom struggle, ensuring the younger generation understood the sacrifices made for their liberty. In his final days, he was receiving medical care at a private hospital.
Former Prime Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda expressed profound sorrow at Shivanna’s passing. In a heartfelt condolence message, Gowda remarked, “I had the privilege of knowing Shivanna for several decades. He was tirelessly involved in numerous community activities. With his demise, our society has lost an incredibly honest personality, deeply committed to serving the nation.”
Family sources have confirmed that H.M. Shivanna’s final rites are scheduled to take place on Wednesday, allowing the community and his loved ones to pay their last respects to a legend.
