The long-awaited Vypeen beach corridor project is officially underway! With the tender successfully awarded, this ambitious initiative is set to revitalize three of Vypeen’s most beautiful coastal areas: Cherai, Munambam, and Kuzhipilly beaches. This extensive makeover is expected to significantly boost the region’s tourism appeal.
K.N. Unnikrishnan, the MLA for Vypeen, emphasized that the project aims to develop crucial basic amenities and actively promote tourism across these beaches. Visitors can look forward to exciting new additions, including open-air gyms, beautifully landscaped walkways, dedicated children’s play zones, and convenient snack bars. The core idea behind this venture is to significantly upgrade existing infrastructure and introduce modern facilities to enhance the overall beach experience.
Lijo Joseph, Secretary of the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC), highlighted the vital importance of this work, given the substantial number of tourists the region already attracts. He noted, ‘Cherai stands as one of the most sought-after destinations by international tourists, second only to Fort Kochi. Therefore, the development of essential facilities here is absolutely paramount.’ Specifically for Munambam beach, the project will feature a new open gym for public use, alongside children’s play equipment, a scenic walkway, a prefabricated snack bar, and comfortable seating areas.
Cherai beach is also slated for remarkable enhancements, including a new disabled-friendly walkway, a charming coffee shop, dedicated selfie points for memorable photos, ample seating benches, and a convenient prefabricated rain shelter. Furthermore, the existing watch tower and police aid post will be renovated, and the entire area will benefit from extensive landscaping, complete with a newly established parking area. Meanwhile, Kuzhipilly beach will receive its own set of essential upgrades, such as new play equipment, improved pathways, a prefabricated snack bar, vibrant selfie points, and thoughtful landscaping work.
The State government has officially granted administrative sanction for this impressive project, which comes with a budget of ₹2.96 crore. The responsibility for executing this vision has been entrusted to the Kerala Electrical and Allied Engineering Company Limited (KEL), with completion anticipated within a year.
