The eagerly awaited Dasara Food Festival officially opened its doors at the historic Maharaja College Grounds on Monday. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, joined by Minister for Food and Civil Supplies K.H. Muniyappa, inaugurated the culinary spectacle. This year, the festival embraces the heartwarming theme of “Ruchiyondige Swachhateya Siri,” which translates to “Taste with Cleanliness,” promising both delicious food and a pristine environment.
Food lovers can mark their calendars as the festival runs from September 22 through October 5.
During his inaugural address, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah delivered a sharp critique of Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the Goods and Services Tax (GST). He pointed out, “Mr. Modi implemented GST. Mr. Modi increased GST. And now, Mr. Modi is getting pats on the back for it.”
Reflecting on eight years of substantial GST revenue, Mr. Siddaramaiah posed a direct question: “Will the Prime Minister now return all that to the people of India?”
He further elaborated, stating, “Our party had staunchly opposed the GST increase to 18% and 28%. It’s ironic that those who profited from these collections for so many years are now claiming credit. Observe their cunning strategy; it’s something you should not be swayed by.”
Shifting focus to poverty alleviation, Mr. Siddaramaiah emphasized his government’s commitment, declaring, “We introduced Anna Bhagya, providing 10 kg of rice to ensure that no poor person goes to bed hungry.”
Minister Muniyappa reinforced this by mentioning that the Food Security Act, a flagship initiative of the UPA government, continues to guarantee 10 kg of free rice to eligible underprivileged families, a program steadfastly upheld by Mr. Siddaramaiah’s government.
The festival boasts an impressive spread with over 160 stalls, featuring 121 vegetarian and 39 non-vegetarian options. Visitors can embark on a culinary journey, savoring everything from authentic Mysuru specialties, unique Tribal and Malnad dishes, and distinct Kodava and Karavali flavors, to delights from North and Central Karnataka, as well as popular Gujarati, Rajasthani, Hyderabadi, and Kerala delicacies.
Attendees are kindly reminded to help maintain the festival’s theme of cleanliness, minimize food wastage, and serve themselves only the amount they plan to consume.
The inauguration was graced by the presence of Minister for Energy K.J. George, alongside various MLAs, MLCs, and government officials.
