During Monday’s Assembly session on September 22, Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar affirmed that the State government is implementing strict measures to combat pollution emanating from the Narla Tatarao Thermal Power Station (NTTPS). His statement underscored the administration’s commitment to protecting the health and ensuring the livelihoods of local inhabitants.
Responding to an inquiry from Mylavaram MLA Vasantha Krishna Prasad, the Minister detailed the ongoing repair work at NTTPS, which is being conducted in strict adherence to the Pollution Control Board’s (PCB) guidelines. He acknowledged that historical pond ash dumping and transportation activities had previously contributed to pollution in surrounding regions. To address this, a new tendering agency has been engaged to manage ash disposal effectively, and a dedicated coal storage shed is currently under construction to mitigate dust emissions.
Minister Ravi Kumar highlighted the government’s substantial investment, noting that ₹50 crore has already been allocated for immediate pollution prevention efforts. Furthermore, an additional ₹500 crore is being invested in new, advanced equipment as part of a broader modernization and renovation initiative. He firmly dismissed concerns that the new tendering process would negatively impact local employment, assuring the Assembly that only trucks owned by area residents would be utilized for ash transportation, with all associated loading and transport expenses borne by the government.
The Minister strongly affirmed GENCO’s unwavering dedication to the well-being of local communities, acknowledging their significant contributions and sacrifices for power generation. He further elaborated that the Energy department has implemented comprehensive medical benefits for residents of neighboring villages, mirroring those provided to GENCO employees. This includes deploying mobile medical units that visit every household, conducting thorough health check-ups, maintaining detailed medical records, and providing free treatment from specialist doctors. Additionally, regular medical camps are being held to proactively address any emerging health issues within these communities.
Mr. Ravi Kumar concluded by reiterating, “Our government considers it a fundamental responsibility to protect the health and livelihoods of our people while simultaneously ensuring environmentally responsible power generation. We are absolutely committed to achieving this balance.”
