Thrissur district is intensifying its efforts to prevent amoebic meningoencephalitis, a critical step decided at a recent review meeting chaired by District Collector Arjun Pandian on Saturday. These measures aim to safeguard public health across the region.
The meeting underscored the importance of escalating chlorination efforts for all drinking water sources throughout September. Additionally, households across the district will receive bleaching powder and informative awareness leaflets, empowering communities with essential prevention knowledge.
Rigorous Water Quality Checks and Public Education
To further enhance public safety, comprehensive health awareness sessions will be conducted in schools. These sessions will focus on educating students about the causes of amoebic meningoencephalitis and crucial precautions. Higher secondary schools equipped with water testing laboratories will also open their facilities for students to bring and test drinking water from their homes, fostering a proactive approach to water safety.
Local self-government institutions have been explicitly instructed to ensure continuous chlorination of all swimming pools and public wells. Meanwhile, officials from the Kerala Water Authority are tasked with the regular disinfection of all water storage tanks. In a collaborative initiative, the Health Department and the Pollution Control Board will jointly inspect water quality in theme parks, ensuring that recreational facilities adhere to proper chlorination standards.
A large-scale, district-wide mass chlorination campaign is strategically planned for September 27 and 28. To guarantee the success and effective coordination of this vital initiative, a preparatory meeting will be convened with all local body chairpersons.
