Thrissur is enveloped in profound sadness as it prepares to say its final goodbyes to Archbishop Emeritus Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy, the revered former leader of the Thrissur Archdiocese. For over half a century, he guided the church with unwavering wisdom, deep humility, and boundless compassion. Thousands of devoted followers are expected to converge on the city to pay their respects during the two-day funeral rites, a solemn tribute to a beloved prelate.
To countless believers, Mar Thoomkuzhy was far more than just a church official; he was a constant source of solace and blessing, a guiding light whose life exemplified true faith. Throughout Sunday and Monday, Thrissur anticipates a continuous stream of mourners—including priests, bishops, church dignitaries, and ordinary citizens—coming from across Kerala and beyond to offer their heartfelt farewells.
The funeral ceremonies will commence on Sunday morning at the Archdiocesan headquarters with a sacred service led by Archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath. At 12:15 p.m., the mortal remains will be transferred to the magnificent Basilica of Our Lady of Dolours (Puthanpally) for public viewing until 3 p.m. Within the basilica, meticulous arrangements, supported by police and volunteers, have been made to ensure that mourners can pay their respects in an orderly and dignified manner.
The Solemn Procession
Following the public homage, the body will be gently carried in a beautifully adorned vehicle, part of a poignant funeral procession. This procession will weave through the historic Swaraj Round before arriving at the Lourdes Cathedral by late evening.
At 5 p.m., a solemn Holy Mass will be celebrated within the cathedral, with Mar Thazhath presiding as the chief celebrant. Bishop Mar Pauly Kannookadan of Irinjalakuda will deliver a poignant message, joined by co-celebrants Auxiliary Bishop Mar Tony Neelankavil and Archbishop Mar Prince Panengaden of Shamshabad. The Lourdes Cathedral will remain open late into the night, allowing more people to offer their final tributes.
In a move that beautifully reflects his lifelong dedication to helping the less fortunate, the Archdiocese has issued a heartfelt and unique request: instead of bringing traditional floral wreaths or bouquets, mourners are encouraged to donate saris or other clothing items. These thoughtful contributions will later be distributed to underprivileged women and families in need, a symbolic continuation of a charitable practice Mar Thoomkuzhy passionately upheld throughout his life.
A Legacy of Generosity, Not Expensive Gifts
Mar Thoomkuzhy consistently discouraged visitors from presenting him with costly gifts. Instead, with a gentle yet firm insistence and a disarming smile, he would often request a sari, explaining, “Not for me, but for a poor young woman’s wedding.” Over many years, a collection of saris accumulated at the Archbishop’s residence, each one later bestowed as a precious blessing upon a bride from a struggling family. For countless young women who might never have dreamed of wearing a beautiful sari on their special day, this gift from Mar Thoomkuzhy was more than just an garment—it was a cherished memory imbued with grace and kindness.
On Monday afternoon, his body will be transported to the ‘Home of Love,’ a part of the Kristu Dasi Generalate in Kozhikode, where the final funeral rituals will conclude. The Kristu Dasi, a religious congregation founded by Mar Thoomkuzhy himself, is renowned for its devoted pastoral and social service, carrying forward his enduring legacy of care.
