Shimla, Himachal Pradesh: The Himachal Pradesh government has initiated the ‘Pashu Mitra Policy-2025’ to enhance local involvement in the animal husbandry sector. This forward-thinking policy aims to bolster veterinary healthcare and improve breed improvement services by appointing 1,000 young individuals from rural communities as ‘Pashu Mitras’.
The policy is designed to address the immediate health needs of cattle and other domestic animals. Selected ‘Pashu Mitras’ will act as a crucial link between veterinarians and farmers, particularly in remote areas where access to veterinary services is limited. This initiative not only ensures better livestock management and community participation but also creates local employment opportunities, with each ‘Pashu Mitra’ receiving an honorarium of ₹5,000 per month for approximately 4 hours of daily work.
These appointees will also be involved in raising awareness about critical local issues such as man-animal conflicts and stray cattle management. Eligibility criteria include being a resident of the respective gram panchayat or urban local body. Their duties will encompass assisting at veterinary institutions and livestock farms, including the handling of large animals and managing logistical tasks like transporting liquid nitrogen containers.
