Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin recently made a heartfelt appeal to educators, asking them to ease the academic pressure on students. He emphasized the critical need for teachers to truly understand each student’s unique home environment and the various challenges their families navigate in our fast-paced world.
During an event hosted by the School Education Department in Chennai, Chief Minister Stalin underscored that “psychological well-being and physical health are paramount, just as crucial as the academic knowledge you impart to students.” He highlighted a modern reality: many children now spend more hours with their teachers than with their own parents, making the educator’s role even more vital.
He further elaborated, “While some students come from privileged, educated households, a significant number hail from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds, striving hard to improve their social standing.” Mr. Stalin stressed that teachers bear a profound responsibility to nurture every student’s growth by delving into their individual family situations and the broader societal hurdles they encounter. He poignantly described teachers as “second parents.”
Acknowledging the transformative power of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Mr. Stalin highlighted the evolving role of teachers. He cautioned against students believing that “Google and AI hold all the answers,” urging educators to draw a clear distinction between human intellect and technology. He called upon teachers to instill strong ethical values and moral character, advising them to go beyond the curriculum by encouraging students to explore literature, cultivate general awareness, embrace social norms, and develop a keen understanding of environmental issues and climate change.
Drawing inspiration from insightful YouTube videos that promote critical thinking and problem-solving, Mr. Stalin encouraged teachers to innovate. “Teachers should actively create new video content to foster students’ diverse talents,” he suggested, adding a powerful metaphor: “Your dedication and efforts today will plant the seeds for a brighter, more promising tomorrow.”
In a call to action, the Chief Minister urged teachers to step into leadership roles, guiding the next generation. “Beyond academics, you must ensure that students’ minds remain uncorrupted by societal ills like caste discrimination and outdated notions of gender inequality,” he asserted. He stressed the importance of engaging students in discussions about the fundamental principles of equality and social justice.
The event also marked significant developmental initiatives: Mr. Stalin officially inaugurated a comprehensive training program for 2,715 newly appointed teachers. He unveiled 76 new school buildings, constructed at a cost of ₹122 crore, and laid the groundwork for 263 additional schools with an investment of ₹310 crore. Additionally, a modern building for the Scouts and Guides Headquarters was initiated. Distinguished attendees included Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, Health Minister Ma. Subramanian, Municipal Administration and Water Supply Minister K.N. Nehru, and School Education Secretary B. Chandra Mohan.
