The Assam government announced a three-day state mourning period, effective from Saturday, September 20, 2025, following the passing of celebrated singer, filmmaker, and cultural icon Zubeen Garg in Singapore.
Chief Secretary Ravi Kota conveyed the news through a social media post, stating, "The Government of Assam expresses deep shock and sorrow at the passing of Shri Zubeen Garg, eminent singer, filmmaker and cultural icon."
The Chief Minister’s Office of Assam also shared a heartfelt message on X: "🕯️ In loving memory of Assam’s eternal voice, Zubeen Garg. As a mark of respect, HCM Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed that State Mourning be declared from 20th to 22nd September 2025. During this period, all official entertainment, ceremonial programs and public celebrations…"
Chief Secretary Kota further clarified that during this period, from September 20th to 22nd, all official entertainment, dinners, and ceremonial functions would be cancelled.
Additionally, the ‘Seva Saptah’ (Service Week) programs, designed for community welfare, will also be postponed as a gesture of profound respect.
However, critical service-oriented activities, such as health camps, ‘Nikshay Mitra’ support for TB patients, and various plantation drives, are slated to proceed without interruption, ensuring continued public well-being.
