In a somber turn of events, Manipur was once again shaken by violence as an ambush targeting an Assam Rifles convoy in Bishnupur district on Friday led to the loss of two brave soldiers and left five others wounded. The attack, which occurred in the Nambol Sabal Leikai area, approximately 2 km from the convoy’s destination, was carried out by unidentified militants. Officials reported that the militants first disabled the vehicle by firing at its tires before unleashing heavy automatic gunfire. The deceased have been identified as Naik Subedar Shyam Gurung and Rifleman Ranjit Singh Kashyap. This incident is particularly concerning as it is the first targeted attack on security forces in the state since July 14, 2024, and comes just a week after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Manipur, where he appealed for an end to violence. Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, strongly condemned the attack, vowing that the perpetrators would be brought to justice. The ambush occurred amidst ongoing protests by Meitei residents in valley areas against the Assam Rifles, whom they accuse of bias. The Assam Rifles, however, deny these allegations. The incident also comes shortly after a tripartite agreement was signed with Kuki-Zo insurgent groups, aiming to foster peace. Security forces suspect the involvement of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Manipur, a separatist group active in the region, in the ambush.
