Sri Sathya Sai District Collector A. Shyam Prasad recently announced a comprehensive action plan aimed at significantly boosting the region’s primary sector. The ambitious goal is to increase its contribution to the district’s Gross Value Addition (GVA) by at least 15%.
During a pivotal review meeting with leaders from agriculture and allied departments, the Collector emphasized the critical need for a unified approach. This involves synergizing efforts across various key areas: horticulture, sericulture, animal husbandry, fisheries, micro-irrigation, and market strategies. The ultimate objective is to fortify the rural economy and ensure sustainable development.
Horticulture officials received clear directives to expand cultivation, placing a high priority on diverse fruit and vegetable crops. Mr. Prasad particularly highlighted the importance of surpassing existing micro-irrigation targets. He explained that this can be achieved by introducing innovative, climate-resilient crops like chia, which are vital for helping farmers thrive even in drought-prone conditions.
Addressing Tomato Price Volatility
Collector Shyam Prasad also addressed the pressing issue of fluctuating tomato prices, a significant concern for farmers in the district. He instructed marketing officials to diligently monitor these price movements, provide timely advice to farmers, and implement measures to stabilize the market. Furthermore, he stressed that constructing numerous farm ponds is essential for conserving precious water resources and ensuring long-term crop sustainability.
In conclusion, the Collector reiterated the vital role of natural farming, expanding sericulture, and ensuring wider access to Kisan Credit Cards (KCC). These initiatives, he noted, are crucial steps towards mitigating the impact of recurring droughts and fostering a resilient agricultural landscape in the region.
