On Friday, October 31, 2025, officials from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted a crucial visit to the location of the devastating stampede that occurred during a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally. The unfortunate incident, which took place on September 27, unfolded at Velusamypuram, situated on the outskirts of Karur.
The investigative team, headed by Superintendent of Police Praveen Kumar, meticulously examined the geographical layout of the area and its various approach roads. This included a detailed inspection of the exact spot where TVK president Vijay addressed a massive gathering from his caravan, as well as his travel route from Velayutham Palayam, the entry point into Karur district from Namakkal. They also noted the positions of local shops, eateries, and the hospital near the tragic site.
For a comprehensive understanding of the events, a visual timeline detailing how the Karur tragedy unfolded is available.
Some local police personnel were also present during this extensive field inspection conducted by the CBI team, offering their support and insights.
Earlier in the investigation, CBI officials reportedly questioned Inspector Manivannan of the Karur Town police station. Inspector Manivannan was responsible for filing the initial First Information Report (FIR) on September 27 regarding the fatalities in the stampede. This inquiry took place at the Circuit House, which is currently serving as a temporary operational base for the CBI.
Following directives from the Supreme Court, the CBI officially took over this high-profile case a few days prior, marking a significant escalation in the investigation.
