With the highly anticipated 2025 local body elections drawing near, Kerala is buzzing with intensified preparations. While the official schedule from the State Election Commission is still awaited, it’s widely expected that voters will head to the polls in late November or early December.
Following a recent delimitation exercise by the State Delimitation Commission, the number of wards across Kerala’s 1,200 local bodies has increased to 23,612. However, the 2025 elections will encompass 23,576 wards, as 36 wards in the Mattannur municipality of Kannur are not due for elections until 2027. The final voter list, released by the commission, reveals a total of 2,84,30,761 eligible voters across the state.
The updated voter roll for Kerala meticulously details its demographic breakdown: 1,50,18,010 women, 1,34,12,470 men, and 281 transgender voters. Additionally, 2,841 overseas electors are registered to participate.
This revised list, with January 1, 2025, as the qualifying date for enrollment, is crucial for the elections. It applies to 17,337 wards in 941 grama panchayats, 3,240 wards in 87 municipalities, and 421 wards across six Corporations.
State Election Commissioner A. Shajahan has already engaged in extensive discussions with senior political party leaders throughout Kerala, emphasizing the need for their full cooperation to ensure a smooth and successful electoral process.
