In a significant move on Wednesday, two former police constables from Tiruvannamalai East Police Station, who had been dismissed from service following serious rape allegations, were officially charged under the rigorous Tamil Nadu Goondas Act.
According to police sources, Superintendent of Police (SP) M. Sudhakar personally issued the order to invoke the Goondas Act against the two former officers, D. Suresh Raj and P. Sundar, underscoring the severity of their alleged crimes.
The shocking incident, which unfolded in September, involved a survivor from Andhra Pradesh who was transporting vegetables and fruits with her sister in a goods-laden truck destined for Tiruvannamalai’s central market. On their return journey, near Endal village on the town’s outskirts, the two constables allegedly stopped their vehicle under the guise of document verification. Tragically, they then reportedly took the survivor to a secluded location and subjected her to rape.
The constables fled the scene after the horrific act, which transpired past midnight. With the timely assistance of local residents, the survivor bravely made her way to the Government Medical College Hospital in Tiruvannamalai to report the incident and receive urgent care.
Prompt action was taken against the accused: they were arrested, suspended, and subsequently dismissed from police service. After being presented before a local court, both constables were remanded and are currently held at the Central Prison in Vellore, awaiting further legal proceedings.
