India is proud to announce that Mumbai will host its very first global Climate Week in February 2026. This landmark event is designed to unite climate experts from across the Global South, focusing on creating tangible climate action plans. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized that the week will gather the brightest minds to forge practical solutions for our shared climate hurdles, providing a crucial platform for developing nations to collaborate and amplify their voices on the international stage.
Fadnavis highlighted that the Mumbai Climate Week will stand as India’s premier citizen-led initiative, dedicated to accelerating climate action. Anticipating participation from over 30 countries, the event will see representatives converge in Mumbai. Their mission: to craft practical climate strategies in collaboration with city leaders, state Chief Ministers, civil society organizations, corporations, students, and young activists. A formal invitation has been extended to the Prime Minister for the inauguration.
Shishir Joshi, founder and CEO of Project Mumbai, the organizing body working with the Maharashtra Government, elaborated on the inspiration behind this initiative. He noted that while similar events like New York’s Climate Week and London’s Action Week are prominent in the Global North, these often feature Global North leaders dominating discussions. Recognizing that significant climate action is underway in the Global South, Joshi explained the need to spotlight India’s pivotal leadership role in these efforts. This vision ultimately led to the creation of Mumbai Climate Week.
The inaugural Mumbai Climate Week will delve into three critical, interconnected themes: sustainable food systems, accelerating energy transition, and enhancing urban resilience. Each of these areas will be explored through the crucial perspectives of justice, innovative solutions, and effective funding mechanisms, ensuring the platform comprehensively tackles both climate adaptation and mitigation strategies. Beyond policymakers and experts, the event will actively empower citizens and grassroots initiatives. The week’s diverse activities will also incorporate discussions on mental health, art, spirituality, sports, and cinema, demonstrating a holistic approach. Furthermore, a special climate-focused food festival is on the agenda to encourage broader public engagement.
Notable partners collaborating with the Maharashtra Government and Project Mumbai for this event include The Climate Group (known for hosting New York Climate Week), the India Climate Collaborative, WRI, Eversource, and UNICEF, highlighting a broad coalition of support.
