A cloud of controversy has engulfed the Government Medical College Hospital in Kottayam after the family of a 49-year-old woman, Shalini Ambujakshan, lodged a formal police complaint alleging that her death was a direct result of medical negligence. Shalini, a resident of Kothanallur, had no known pre-existing health complications such as hypertension or diabetes, according to her distraught husband, Ambujakshan.
The events leading to her untimely demise began on Monday when Shalini arrived at the hospital’s gynaecology department at 6 a.m. for a routine dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure. She was accompanied by her daughter, having traveled to the hospital by auto-rickshaw. However, shortly after being administered medication in preparation for the procedure, Shalini reportedly felt unwell and suddenly lost consciousness. She was immediately transferred to a ventilator, but tragically, her condition continued to deteriorate, and she was declared dead at 5 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
In light of the family’s serious accusations, the Gandhi Nagar police have officially registered a case to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding Shalini’s death. Conversely, the hospital administration has firmly rebutted the allegations, asserting that no medical error occurred during her treatment and that all standard protocols were diligently followed.
