In a significant move for India’s aviation sector, state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has entered into an agreement with Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) to produce the SJ-100 civilian commuter aircraft. This collaboration is set to address India’s projected need for over 200 regional jets in the coming decade.
The announcement comes shortly before an anticipated visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin and amid increasing international pressure on India to reduce its reliance on Russian energy and defense equipment. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh lauded the agreement as a pivotal step for India’s civil aviation industry.
The memorandum of understanding was signed in Moscow by officials from both HAL and UAC. Under this pact, HAL will gain the rights to manufacture the SJ-100, a twin-engine, narrow-body aircraft designed to carry up to 100 passengers. Previously known as the Sukhoi Superjet 100, the SJ-100 first flew in 2008.
This partnership builds on HAL’s existing, long-standing relationship with UAC, which includes the licensed production of the Su-30MKI fighter jet for the Indian Air Force. Sources indicate that UAC had previously proposed the SJ-100 to India approximately ten years ago to meet the rising demand for regional air transport.
The SJ-100 represents a crucial development, marking the first time a complete passenger aircraft will be manufactured in India since the production of the Avro HS 748 by HAL between 1961 and 1988. The Defence Minister highlighted that the SJ-100 is poised to be a game-changer for short-haul connectivity under the UDAN Scheme and a significant stride towards ‘Aatmanirbharta’ (self-reliance) in civil aviation. He also noted that this manufacturing initiative will stimulate the private sector and generate substantial employment opportunities.
HAL anticipates that India’s aviation market will require over 200 regional jets for domestic connectivity within the next ten years, with an additional 350 aircraft needed for routes in the Indian Ocean region catering to international tourism. The company expressed that this collaboration with UAC is founded on mutual trust and signifies a new era for India’s aviation industry, advancing its goal of self-sufficiency.
