In the wake of a distressing alleged suicide case involving a woman doctor in Maharashtra’s Satara district, NCP MLA Dhananjay Munde has voiced a strong demand for a thorough and impartial investigation. He is advocating for the formation of a special committee headed by a senior woman IPS officer to probe the incident. This call comes after Munde met with the doctor’s grieving family in her native Beed district.
Speaking to reporters, Munde emphasized his request that the Satara police be excluded from the investigation to ensure objectivity. The doctor, who was serving at a government hospital in Satara and hailed from Beed district, was found deceased in a hotel room in Phaltan on the night of October 23. Her suicide note reportedly detailed allegations of rape by a police sub-inspector and mental harassment by a software engineer, both of whom have since been arrested.
Munde suggested that the doctor’s extreme step was a consequence of alleged harassment by both police and medical officials in Satara. He questioned the circumstances, pointing out that the doctor had recently sought her caste certificate for postgraduate studies, raising doubts about the suicide narrative. “If the doctor wished to do PG, how could she commit suicide?” he queried.
The legislator further highlighted irregularities, questioning why the police conducted the autopsy before the doctor’s family arrived. He stated that the police officials involved in the case, as well as their call records, should be thoroughly investigated, especially as the names of an MP and two PAs have reportedly surfaced in connection with the case. Munde vowed to continue his efforts until justice is served to the doctor, also alleging that her harassment might have been linked to her community and her origins in Beed.
This situation has drawn parallels to Munde’s own past, as he had previously resigned from the Maharashtra cabinet following the arrest of a close aide in a murder case in Beed district.
