Over 2,200 participants laced up their running shoes for the highly anticipated second edition of the “Sikkim Soldierathon,” a challenging yet exhilarating hill half-marathon held in Gangtok on Sunday, October 26, 2025.
The event kicked off with great fanfare at Paljor Stadium, graced by the esteemed presence of Mizoram Governor General V.K. Singh (Retired) and Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur, who officially flagged off the marathon.
Under the inspiring theme “Great Himalayan Connect,” this unique marathon sought to achieve multiple noble goals. It aimed to forge a stronger bond between the Indian Army and the nation’s citizens, especially the younger generation, while simultaneously boosting fitness awareness and promoting vibrant sports tourism throughout the stunning Himalayan state of Sikkim.
Runners of all levels embraced the challenge across three categories: a spirited 5-km race, a demanding 10-km route, and the ultimate 21-km hill half-marathon. Among the diverse crowd of over 2,200 participants were dedicated soldiers from the Sikkim Scouts, Ladakh Scouts, and Dogra Scouts, adding a truly special dimension to the event.
The “Sikkim Soldierathon” was a collaborative effort, proudly hosted by the Eastern Command and Trishakti Corps, in partnership with Raj Bhavan, Sikkim, and ‘Fitistan: Ek Fit Bharat’ – a dynamic, community-driven fitness application.
A wide array of attractive prizes awaited the winners, while every single participant was honored with a well-deserved achiever’s medal and various promotional items. Generous cash prizes were sponsored by Sikkim Raj Bhavan, further enhancing the competitive spirit. Beyond the race, the event captivated attendees with diverse cultural performances, contributing to an exhilarating and electrifying atmosphere that celebrated both athleticism and local heritage.
Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur lauded the Soldierathon as an inspirational initiative, highlighting its positive impact on empowering the state’s youth, fostering robust military-social coordination, and raising civil consciousness. He extended his heartfelt congratulations to the dedicated organizing committee, the esteemed army officers, all the spirited participants, and every collaborating organization for making the event a resounding success.
Lieutenant General Ram Chander Tiwari, addressing the gathering, emphasized the profound significance of the marathon. “Every step you take today is a heartfelt tribute to the unwavering valor and immense sacrifice of our soldiers who steadfastly guard our borders,” he remarked. “I am deeply honored to be a part of this vibrant new initiative, which not only champions a ‘Fit India’ but also strengthens the invaluable bond between the Indian Army and our cherished citizens.”
Lieutenant General Man Raj Singh Mann highlighted the extraordinary nature of the “Sikkim Soldierathon,” describing it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for civilians to run alongside the courageous soldiers who tirelessly maintain their vigil on the nation’s borders, twenty-four hours a day.
