Reading Time: 3 min

Cyclone Montha Live Updates: The India Meteorological Department has issued significant rain alerts for coastal states along India’s eastern seaboard due to a deep depression forming over the Bay of Bengal. This system, named ‘Montha’, has already been classified as a cyclonic storm and is predicted to intensify into a ‘severe cyclonic storm’ as it moves closer to the coast.

In response to the impending threat, the IMD has warned of heavy rainfall across parts of Odisha, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh. By October 28, the forecast indicated further intensification of Montha, leading states in the cyclone’s path to implement emergency and disaster management protocols.

Andhra Pradesh has declared a two-day holiday for schools in districts expected to bear the brunt of the cyclone, including Visakhapatnam, Anakapalle, and West Godavari districts, to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Additionally, the IMD has issued an orange alert for several districts in Tamil Nadu, namely Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Ranipet, as the cyclone draws nearer.

Key Points Regarding Cyclonic Storm Montha:

  • Cyclone Montha, currently exhibiting maximum sustained wind speeds of 90-100 kmph with gusts up to 110 kmph, is projected to make landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, on the evening or night of October 28, assuming its current north-northwestward track continues.
  • The IMD has placed specific parts of Andhra Pradesh on a red alert. This high-alert status is active for districts including Kakinada, Kona Seema, Eluru, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Baptala, Prakasam, and SPSR Nellore, based on the official IMD warning system.
  • Meanwhile, an orange alert has been issued for other regions of Andhra Pradesh, as well as for Tamil Nadu and Odisha, indicating a significant risk of heavy rainfall and strong winds.

Key Updates:

  • Cyclone Montha Live Updates: All 30 districts of Odisha are on high alert as the depression in the Bay of Bengal intensifies. The state anticipates very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall on October 28 and 29. Maritime authorities have hoisted cautionary signals and advised fishermen to avoid the sea until October 29.
  • Cyclone Montha Live Updates: A red alert has been issued for several districts in Andhra Pradesh, including Kakinada, Kona Seema, Eluru, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Baptala, Prakasam, and SPSR Nellore. Simultaneously, a two-day school holiday has been announced in affected districts within the state.
