India’s team selection for the Women’s ODI World Cup has often sparked discussion, particularly concerning the deployment of specialist pacers. However, bowling coach Aavishkar Salvi has firmly asserted that these strategic decisions are not arbitrary but rather a calculated ‘horses-for-courses’ approach.
“For us, all 15 players in the squad are considered match-winners,” Salvi explained on Saturday, just before India’s final league fixture against Bangladesh. “Our playing XI is meticulously chosen based on the specific pitch conditions and the strengths of the opposition we are facing. There’s no hint of inconsistency; it’s purely about assembling the strongest possible eleven tailored to that particular surface and opponent.”
Regarding the fitness of wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh, who injured her left hand during India’s recent victory at DY Patil Stadium—a win that secured their spot in the semifinals—Salvi offered a hopeful update. “She is doing fine, and our strength and conditioning team is looking after her diligently,” he confirmed. While precise details about her availability for Sunday’s game were not disclosed, Salvi added, “She seems to be in good spirits.”
