In a significant development just weeks before the Dampa by-election, Mizoram’s leading opposition party, the Mizo National Front (MNF), has escalated concerns to the Election Commission. The complaint targets Chief Minister Lalduhoma and his adviser, Dr. Lorrain Lalpekliana Chinzah, alleging serious violations of the model code of conduct.
According to an election official, the MNF’s legal team formally submitted their complaint on Friday, October 25, 2025. They accuse Chief Minister Lalduhoma of flouting election norms during a recent campaign stop in Reiek village, Mamit district. The allegations include announcing a substantial ₹700-crore water project for the Dampa constituency and promising farmers turmeric processing machines – pledges that are prohibited once the model code of conduct is in effect.
Furthermore, the MNF’s complaint extends to Dr. Lorrain Lalpekliana Chinzah, a ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) MLA and an adviser to the Chief Minister. He is accused of organizing a free medical camp within the Dampa area after the imposition of the election code, which restricts such activities to ensure a level playing field.
Authorities have confirmed that these serious allegations are currently under active investigation by the Election Commission.
The Dampa by-election, scheduled for November 11, sees five candidates vying for the crucial assembly seat. The ruling ZPM has put forward Mizo singer and preacher Vanlalsailova. The MNF has nominated its senior vice-president and former health minister, Dr. R. Lalthangliana. The Congress party is represented by its vice-president and former transport minister, John Rotluangliana.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated Lalhmingthanga, who recently joined the party, while the People’s Conference, led by former Chief Minister Brig. T Sailo, has fielded its vice-president K. Zahmingthanga.
A total of 20,790 registered voters, including 10,185 women, are eligible to cast their ballots and determine the outcome for these five contenders. The counting of votes is set to take place on November 14.
This by-election became necessary following the unfortunate passing of the sitting MNF legislator, Lalrintluanga Sailo, on July 21.
