India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), is set to thoroughly review an incident involving a power bank catching fire aboard a domestic flight last week, announced Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu on Saturday, October 25, 2025.
The incident in question occurred on October 19. A passenger’s power bank unexpectedly caught fire on an IndiGo aircraft bound for Dimapur while the plane was taxiing at Delhi airport. Fortunately, the alert cabin crew successfully extinguished the blaze, preventing a more serious situation.
Responding to queries, Mr. Naidu confirmed that the DGCA would take charge and conduct a detailed review of the incident.
“The DGCA is going to take care. They are going to review [the incident]…” he stated during an event held in the national capital.
This incident brings renewed attention to the existing stringent regulations for carrying electronic devices, especially those powered by lithium batteries, on commercial flights. Such batteries are known to pose potential fire risks under certain conditions.
The review also comes shortly after a similar event reported last week, where a lithium battery stored in an overhead compartment of an Air China aircraft ignited. That plane was operating on a route from Hangzhou to Seoul.
