Forensic experts from the Andhra Pradesh Forensic Science Laboratory (APFSL) have initiated a critical DNA matching process for victims of the horrific private bus fire that occurred in Kurnool. This crucial step began on Saturday, October 25, aiming to identify those who tragically lost their lives in the inferno.
The devastating accident, which took place in the early hours of Friday near Chinna Tekur village on the outskirts of Kurnool, saw a Bengaluru-bound bus erupt in flames after colliding with a two-wheeler on the National Highway. The catastrophe claimed the lives of nineteen passengers, who were burned beyond recognition.
In response to the tragedy, a massive team of sixteen forensic experts, led by APFSL Director G. Pala Raju, swiftly deployed to the accident site. This specialized team included two Joint Directors, four Assistant Directors, and several Scientific Assistant Directors, all dedicated to collecting and preserving samples vital for DNA matching.
An investigating officer explained the immense challenge, stating, “Given that the bodies were severely charred and unrecognizable, they have been carefully preserved in the mortuary. The remains will only be released to their grieving families following conclusive DNA analysis.”
On Saturday, Mr. Pala Raju confirmed that soft tissue samples from 18 victims, along with blood samples from their respective family members, have been meticulously collected to facilitate the identification process.
“Some of the bodies were almost entirely incinerated in the blaze,” the Director noted, highlighting the extreme conditions faced by the victims. “Therefore, our forensic experts have also collected bone fragments from all 19 victims to ensure comprehensive DNA sampling.”
The intricate process of DNA extraction is now underway at the APFSL in Amaravati. A DNA sample from one currently unidentified body has been carefully preserved at the FSL. If any individual comes forward to claim this body, it will be released only after a definitive match is established with their provided blood sample.
Mr. Pala Raju assured the public that, “We anticipate completing the entire DNA matching process, including the comparison with blood samples, within 48 hours. Once our forensic work is finalized, local police authorities will promptly coordinate the handover of the identified remains to their heartbroken families.”
