The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast for heavy rainfall across various parts of Telangana between October 27 and 29. This comes as a depression currently active over the Bay of Bengal is projected to intensify into a cyclonic storm.
Dharma Raju, a scientist at the IMD Hyderabad centre, explained that the weather system, presently a depression, is expected to strengthen into a deep depression by October 26. It is then anticipated to evolve into a full-fledged cyclone by October 27. “We are expecting significant rainfall in Telangana on October 27 and 28,” he stated.
Southern and eastern districts of Telangana are predicted to bear the brunt of this weather system, while Hyderabad is likely to experience milder conditions, with light to intermittent showers and predominantly cloudy skies.
For October 25 and 26, light to moderate rainfall is expected, primarily in the eastern and southern areas of the state. However, the weather pattern is set to shift dramatically from the evening of October 27 as the depression transitions into a cyclone.
Mr. Raju further elaborated, “From the evening of October 27 onwards, the weather situation across Telangana will change considerably. The cyclonic system is most likely to make landfall on October 28, bringing with it intense rains.”
The IMD scientist also indicated that the wet spell could extend until October 29, though the intensity of the rainfall is expected to lessen gradually.
This developing weather phenomenon originates from a cyclonic circulation that is currently active over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjacent South Andaman Sea. This circulation led to the formation of a low-pressure area in the same region on the morning of October 24.
This system is forecasted to track in a west-northwest direction, progressively intensifying into a depression by October 25, a deep depression by October 26, and finally a cyclonic storm over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of October 27.
