A horrific bus fire in Kurnool has tragically resulted in the deaths of at least 20 passengers. Investigations into the incident, which occurred on a private bus traveling to Bengaluru, suggest that a significant factor contributing to the intensity of the blaze might have been the presence of approximately 234 smartphones being transported as cargo. These devices were reportedly part of a consignment worth ₹46 lakh, shipped by a Hyderabad-based businessman.
Forensic experts are examining the possibility that exploding batteries from these smartphones could have escalated the fire, turning a potential accident into a catastrophic event. The consignment was destined for Bengaluru and was intended for Flipkart.
What Led to the Tragedy?
The devastating fire erupted after the bus, carrying 44 passengers, collided with a motorcycle on National Highway 44 near Kurnool city in Andhra Pradesh. The impact caused the motorcycle to be dragged under the bus, striking the fuel tank and igniting the flames. Many passengers were asleep at the time, and the situation was further exacerbated when the bus doors jammed due to a suspected short circuit, trapping occupants inside.
Survivors recount a harrowing escape, managing to break windows to flee the rapidly spreading fire. In total, around 20 individuals managed to escape the deadly inferno.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have registered cases of negligence and overspeeding against the two drivers of the bus. One of the drivers, who had reportedly been changing his statement, is under particular scrutiny. Police have taken Siva Narayana, the second driver who was not operating the bus at the time of the collision, into custody. The driver who was on duty, Lakshmaiah, fled the scene immediately after the incident.
