Authorities in Maharashtra announced on Saturday the arrest of Prashant Bankar, one of two individuals accused in connection with the suicide of a 29-year-old female doctor. The tragic incident occurred in the Phaltan taluka of Satara district.
Prashant Bankar is expected to appear in court today. The other accused in this case is Police Sub-Inspector Gopal Badne, who is currently absconding, and efforts are underway to locate and apprehend him.
Investigations revealed a note allegedly written by the deceased doctor on her palm. This note reportedly details accusations against PSI Gopal Badane for rape on multiple occasions and against Prashant Bankar for prolonged physical and mental harassment over five months. The Hindustan Times has confirmed the existence of this note.
The police have since suspended PSI Badane, who is reportedly related to the victim, along with the doctor. The victim, who was employed on a contractual basis as a medical officer at a government hospital in Phaltan, Satara, was discovered hanging in a hotel room on Thursday night.
Following a complaint filed by the victim’s family, an First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against both PSI Badane and Prashant Bankar. The charges include rape and abetment to suicide. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.
The case has drawn significant attention, with political leaders calling for an independent inquiry and the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to thoroughly investigate the alleged suicide.
