In a shocking incident that unfolded in Maralenahalli, a northeastern suburb of Bengaluru, a 60-year-old man named Suresh reportedly shot his son during a heated, alcohol-fueled argument on Thursday night. Police have since confirmed the father’s detention following the violent altercation.
The victim, 28-year-old Harish, sustained head injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Bengaluru. The Doddaballapur Rural Police are actively investigating the matter and have taken Suresh into custody for questioning.
The dispute, which police noted had been ongoing for five years, reached a critical point around 11 p.m. on Thursday. The father and son, who had been living together since Harish’s mother passed away several years ago, began arguing fiercely over property issues. Harish is employed at a private company.
Initial investigations indicate that both individuals were intoxicated when their argument over property distribution intensified. The verbal exchange quickly devolved into a physical fight, with both father and son assaulting each other. It was during this violent scuffle that Suresh allegedly produced his licensed firearm and fired at Harish.
“Neighbours and other villagers swiftly intervened, rushing Harish to a nearby hospital before he was transferred to a larger medical facility in Bengaluru. He remains under close medical observation,” a police officer involved in the investigation informed The Hindu.
According to police statements, Harish had repeatedly sought his share of the family inheritance for several years. However, Suresh had reportedly delayed the distribution, expressing concerns that his son might squander the assets on his drinking habit. This long-standing disagreement over property rights ultimately culminated in Thursday night’s violent confrontation.
Authorities confirmed that Suresh acquired the gun license in 1986, citing security concerns related to his extensive property holdings. The weapon used in the shooting has been seized as the investigation continues.
