The agricultural landscape of Tamil Nadu is currently facing a significant challenge due to incessant heavy rains. In light of these adverse weather conditions, the state government has formally appealed to the Union government, seeking a relaxation in the existing paddy procurement standards, particularly concerning the permissible moisture content.
Historically, the standard allows for a maximum of 17% moisture in paddy grains during procurement. However, given the recent deluge across various districts, farmers are struggling to meet this strict criterion. The Tamil Nadu government has specifically requested that this limit be raised to 22% to prevent massive losses for farmers whose harvests have been impacted by the rains.
In a proactive response, the Union government has swiftly dispatched three dedicated teams of officials to Tamil Nadu. Their primary mission is to conduct a thorough on-the-ground assessment of the situation in the affected districts. This includes meticulously collecting paddy samples, which will then undergo rigorous laboratory analysis at the Food Corporation of India (FCI) facilities within the state.
Upon completion of their assessment and laboratory testing, these joint teams will compile a comprehensive report. This report, along with their expert recommendations, will be submitted to the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution. The findings will be crucial in guiding the Ministry’s decision on whether to approve the requested relaxation of paddy moisture content norms, ultimately providing much-needed relief to the farming community in Tamil Nadu.
