Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) founder T.T.V. Dhinakaran has made an urgent appeal for an immediate and thorough assessment of crop losses in the Cauvery delta, which has been severely impacted by recent adverse weather conditions.
In a statement posted on social media, Mr. Dhinakaran highlighted that the latest spell of heavy rainfall caused extensive damage not only to the crucial paddy crop but also to other essential foodgrains, including pulses and millets. Farmers in the region have expressed deep frustration, pointing out that insufficient government measures to manage the increased paddy yield during the Kuruvai cultivation season led to the spoilage of ‘lakhs of paddy bags’.
The impact of the heavy rains was widespread, affecting not only crops that had already been harvested but also those that were on the verge of being ready for harvest. Mr. Dhinakaran emphasized the critical importance of the government intensifying its paddy procurement process to provide much-needed relief and support to the struggling farming community.
