Chennai and other regions of Tamil Nadu have been significantly impacted by heavy rainfall in recent days, causing waterlogging and traffic disruptions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, will continue to affect districts such as Kanyakumari, Thoothukkudi, Tenkasi, and Tirunelveli today. Heavy rainfall is also anticipated in parts of Chennai, Chengalpattu, and Tiruvallur. In response to the weather conditions, schools in Chennai were closed on Wednesday, and many colleges also declared a holiday. The Dharmapuri district administration announced a holiday for schools on Thursday. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a cyclone alert and a heavy rainfall warning for several areas, noting that a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal is expected to weaken. Water levels in Chennai’s reservoirs have risen rapidly due to the continuous rain, prompting the release of excess water. The Mettur Dam, the state’s largest reservoir, has reached its full capacity.
