The graveyard in Karkhanagadda, a locality within Karimnagar town, transforms into a mesmerizing spectacle during Deepavali. Rather than somber grounds, it becomes a beacon of light, alive with the glow of countless lamps. Families from nearby areas and across town converge here, embodying a profound connection to their ancestors and cherished departed loved ones.
This touching tradition, observed for decades by certain families, sees them gather every Deepavali evening (like Monday, October 20, 2025). They meticulously adorn the graves with vibrant flowers and arrange an array of home-cooked delicacies and sweet desserts. Before these beautifully decorated resting places, they perform heartfelt pujas, seeking the blessings of those who came before them.
Kamsala Srinivas, a former corporator of Karimnagar Municipal Corporation, explains, “This custom has been passed down through generations, beautifully showcasing our deep reverence for our ancestors.” He further elaborates on the ritual: “We lovingly decorate the graves with fresh flowers and light up traditional earthen diyas, followed by our food offerings.”
The evening culminates in a grand, celebratory crescendo with the bursting of firecrackers. These vibrant displays illuminate the entire graveyard, adding a spectacular, shining glow to this truly unique and moving Deepavali celebration.
