Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced on Tuesday that the state has successfully curbed “unconstitutional and unethical moral policing” which had previously tarnished the state’s reputation and hindered its progress. He attributed this achievement to the diligent work of the police department in restoring discipline and public trust.

Speaking at the Police Commemoration Day event in Bengaluru, Siddaramaiah stated, “Illegal and unconstitutional moral policing that had tarnished the state’s reputation has now been brought under control. The credit for this achievement goes entirely to the police department.” He emphasized that the state’s growth is directly dependent on the police’s ability to maintain peace and order, remarking, “If the police uphold law and order, the state’s development becomes possible.” The Chief Minister also commended the police for their improved functioning in checking the drug menace, though he noted that further efforts are needed for more effective management.

Highlighting his government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable communities, Siddaramaiah mentioned the operationalization of DCRE (District Crime Record and Enforcement) police stations. These stations are designed to prevent atrocities against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, and he stressed their importance in upholding constitutional rights and values.

During the event, Siddaramaiah paid a solemn tribute to the police officers who sacrificed their lives in service. He noted that eight police personnel from Karnataka and 191 nationwide had died in the line of duty this year, emphasizing their invaluable sacrifice and commitment. He urged every citizen to remember and honor their service to the nation.

The Chief Minister also underscored the police’s critical role in fostering communal harmony and counteracting disruptive elements. “Police personnel stand at the forefront of maintaining peace and controlling destructive and communal elements. They also bear the responsibility of safeguarding the constitutional rights of citizens,” he said.

In recognition of their service, Siddaramaiah announced several welfare measures for the police force. These include orders for the appointment of 116 individuals on compassionate grounds. Additionally, the government has increased the annual medical reimbursement limit for retired police personnel from ₹1 lakh to ₹1.5 lakh and enhanced the health check-up allowance for serving personnel from ₹1,000 to ₹1,500.

Concluding his address, Siddaramaiah referred to the police force as the “pillar of peace and security,” stating that their dedication ensures both stability and justice. He urged officers to continue their service with integrity and a strong commitment to democratic values, recognizing their crucial role in protecting citizens’ constitutional rights.
