The Tamil Nadu government has recently announced a significant increase in pension benefits for both its esteemed freedom fighters and their deserving descendants. This move comes as a heartfelt recognition of the profound sacrifices and pivotal roles played by these individuals in India’s struggle for independence. The enhanced pensions are effective from August 15, aligning with the commitment made by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin during his Independence Day address this year.
Specifically, the ‘special pension’ allocated to the descendants of legendary freedom fighters has been raised by ₹500, moving from ₹10,500 to a new total of ₹11,000. This lifelong pension benefits the families of revered figures such as the Sivagangai Marudhu Pandiar Brothers, Veerapandia Kattabomman, Mannar Muthuramalinga Vijaya Raghunatha Sethupathy of Ramanathapuram, and V.O. Chidambaranar. Their enduring legacy continues to be honored through this sustained support.
Furthermore, the State government has also boosted the monthly ‘State pension’ for all freedom fighters across Tamil Nadu by a substantial ₹1,000, elevating it from ₹21,000 to ₹22,000. In a similar vein, the monthly family pension for dependents of these brave individuals has seen an increase from ₹11,500 to ₹12,000. These increases underscore the government’s unwavering dedication to the welfare of those who fought for the nation’s freedom and their families.
