The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Monday, October 20, 2025, that a low-pressure area is anticipated to develop over the Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours. This system is projected to bring light to moderate rainfall to various parts of Odisha over the subsequent three days.
The IMD’s recent evening bulletin highlighted the presence of an upper-air cyclonic circulation currently located over the south Andaman Sea and adjacent southeast Bay of Bengal, extending up to 1.5 km above sea level. This circulation is the precursor to the low-pressure area expected to form in the bay by Monday night or early Tuesday.
Forecasters indicate that this evolving weather system will likely track west-northwestwards, strengthening into a depression over the central and adjoining west-central parts of the south Bay of Bengal within the next 48 hours. This intensification could bring more significant weather changes to the region.
However, Manorama Mohanty, the director of the Bhubaneswar meteorological centre, clarified that the IMD does not currently foresee any severe weather events. She explained that Odisha’s expected light to moderate rainfall is primarily due to a shift in wind direction, which will draw moisture into the state. This rain might also be accompanied by lightning and occasional gusty winds.
Mohanty confirmed that the IMD would provide updated, more detailed forecasts once the low-pressure area officially establishes itself over the Bay of Bengal on October 21.
In light of these predictions, the national weather agency has issued a “yellow warning” (indicating a need to be aware) for several districts over the coming 24 hours. Residents in these areas should remain vigilant for changing conditions.
Specifically, coastal and southern regions of Odisha might experience thunderstorms with lightning, alongside winds gusting between 30-40 kmph, in isolated locations.
Furthermore, the IMD predicts similar conditions—thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty surface winds (30-40 kmph)—for individual locations across districts including Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Boudh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri on both Tuesday, October 21, 2025, and Wednesday, October 22, 2025.
