In a heartening development, the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) in Kozhikode has announced another successful recovery from amoebic meningoencephalitis, bringing the total number of patients who have overcome this rare infection in Kerala to four in recent weeks.
The latest individual to be discharged is an 11-year-old girl from Chelari in Malappuram. She was released on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, after her body fluid samples consistently tested negative for the infection twice over a 15-day period. Her dedicated treatment took place at the Institute of Maternal and Child Health wing of the hospital.
This recovery follows three other patients, including two children, who were previously treated and discharged from the same hospital. Currently, nine patients are receiving care at Kozhikode MCH, with one additional patient at a private hospital in Kozhikode city.
Amoebic meningoencephalitis, a devastating brain infection caused by free-living amoebae found in freshwater, lakes, and rivers, has unfortunately claimed at least six lives in Kozhikode since August 14. Its emergence continues to be a serious public health concern across Kerala, making each recovery a significant milestone in the fight against this challenging disease.
