Delhi has officially entered Stage II of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) as the Air Quality Index (AQI) has surpassed the 300 mark, indicating a ‘very poor’ air quality level. This decision was made by the Commission for Air Quality Management, the central government’s anti-pollution task force, following a concerning trend of deteriorating air quality expected to continue in the coming days.
Why GRAP 2 is Activated
The AQI in Delhi has been on a steady rise, recorded at 296 at 4 PM and jumping to 302 by 7 PM on Sunday. Weather forecasts from IMD and IITM predict further worsening conditions. Consequently, the GRAP Sub-Committee has mandated the immediate implementation of all actions under Stage II (‘Very Poor’ Air Quality) across the National Capital Region (NCR), in addition to the measures already in place under Stage I.
On Sunday evening, the AQI stood at 296, a significant indicator of the ‘very poor’ air quality. Neighboring cities like Noida and Ghaziabad also reported ‘very poor’ pollution levels, while Faridabad experienced ‘moderate’ air quality.
Key Restrictions Under GRAP Stage II:
- The use of coal and firewood is strictly prohibited throughout Delhi NCR. This includes a ban on operating tandoors in restaurants and hotels.
- Diesel generator sets are permitted only for essential services and emergency use.
- Construction and demolition activities are halted, and industrial units under specific closure orders must cease operations.
Measures to Combat Pollution:
- Roads will be cleaned using mechanized sweeping, and anti-smog guns will be deployed to control dust.
- Daily water sprinkling will be conducted to suppress dust, particularly at pollution hotspots.
- Power distribution companies are tasked with ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply to reduce reliance on diesel generators.
- Public awareness campaigns will be launched through newspapers, television, and radio to inform citizens about the air pollution levels and necessary precautions.
- Residents are strongly advised to opt for public transportation over private vehicles whenever possible.
- Commuters should consider less congested routes, even if slightly longer, to ease traffic flow.
- Regular maintenance of vehicles, including timely replacement of air filters, is recommended.
