A horrific explosion at a house in Avadi on Sunday resulted in the deaths of four individuals. The residence was reportedly being used to store country-made firecrackers.
According to a senior Avadi police officer, the house, located on Vivasaya Street in Thandurai near Pattabhiram, also operated as an unauthorized shop selling these firecrackers. On the fateful Sunday, several people were present to purchase firecrackers for the upcoming Deepavali festival when, around 3 p.m., a powerful blast rocked the structure. The force of the explosion caused the concrete roof and other parts of the house to collapse.
Upon receiving the alert, Pattabhiram police and fire services rushed to the scene and managed to extinguish the fire. Rescuers recovered four bodies from the debris. Two of the victims have been identified as D. Sunilprakash from Nathambedu and A. Yasin from Nadukuthagai in Thiruninravur, both of whom had come to buy firecrackers. Their bodies have been sent to Government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
Avadi Police Commissioner K. Shankar visited the site to assess the situation. The area surrounding the damaged house has been cordoned off as police launch a full investigation into the origin of the firecrackers and the cause of the explosion. Authorities are urging local residents to report any instances of illegal firecracker storage or unauthorized firecracker shops in their neighborhoods to prevent future tragedies.
