In a significant victory against illegal contraband, Vellore police successfully seized a staggering 323 kg of gutka during a series of surprise inspections near Katpadi on Saturday. Authorities confirmed the arrest of two individuals, P. Senram, 38, and A. Ganapathy Ram, 29, both residents of Rajasthan, in connection with the bust.
The operation unfolded during routine vehicle checks at the Christianpet village police checkpoint, close to Katpadi. Officers flagged down an SUV driven by Ganapathy Ram, whose evasive and inconsistent responses about his travel purpose immediately raised suspicions. A subsequent thorough inspection of the vehicle uncovered the massive quantity of gutka.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the illicit consignment was en route to prominent industrial hubs such as Sriperumbudur and Oragadam in Kancheepuram, where it was intended for distribution to various retail dealers. Both arrested individuals have been remanded to Central Prison in Vellore as Katpadi police continue their extensive probe into the intricate smuggling operation.
