Delhi Police Deploys 23,000 Personnel for Diwali Traffic Amidst Persistent Snarls

In anticipation of the bustling Diwali festivities, Delhi Police has launched a significant operational effort, deploying over 23,000 personnel across the city. This large-scale deployment, involving traffic police, commandos, and paramilitary units like the Rapid Action Force (RAF), aims to manage the festive rush and ensure smooth traffic flow throughout the weekend. However, the city is already grappling with considerable traffic congestion, especially on key routes in central and south Delhi that lead to major shopping hubs and markets.

According to Sanjay Tyagi, Delhi Police spokesperson and Additional Commissioner of Police, more than 3,500 traffic personnel have been strategically positioned at critical intersections, marketplaces, and major roads. Complementing this, approximately 20,000 personnel from district police and specialized units are focused on maintaining law and order.

Tyagi also highlighted the specific deployment of women police staff at numerous intersections and crowded public spaces. This initiative is intended to enhance safety and visibility, ensuring women feel more secure while traveling or shopping, particularly during evening hours.

The deployment extends to paramilitary forces and commandos, who are stationed in sensitive areas to provide rapid response capabilities for any unforeseen incidents. Deputy Commissioner of Police (North), Raja Banthia, noted that in areas like Chandni Chowk, local police conducted security checks, with the Rapid Action Force also present to bolster safety measures.

Tyagi further elaborated that additional personnel have been deployed in Central and South Delhi, areas that typically see a surge in both crowd density and vehicular traffic during the Diwali weekend.

Despite these extensive arrangements, Saturday saw persistent traffic snarls across the city. Heavy festive footfall contributed to slow-moving traffic in many parts of central and south Delhi. Significant congestion was reported in popular areas such as Connaught Place, Lajpat Nagar, Sarojini Nagar, South Extension, Greater Kailash, and Chandni Chowk.

The traffic issues extended to arterial roads, including the Ring Road, Mathura Road, Aurobindo Marg, and Outer Ring Road. Traffic officials indicated that diversions were implemented where necessary, and additional marshals were deployed to help manage the flow of vehicles. Commuters were advised to utilize public transport and avoid peak hour travel in market areas.

Historically, Diwali weekends present a considerable challenge to Delhi’s road network due to increased travel, shopping activities, and public gatherings. This year’s enhanced measures are designed to mitigate delays and foster a safe, incident-free festive period.

“Our focus is not just on managing traffic but also on creating a safe and secure atmosphere for women and families celebrating the festival. All units are on alert,” Tyagi emphasized.

The increased police presence and traffic management efforts are expected to continue throughout the weekend and into October 21, addressing the continued crowding in markets and on roads due to post-Diwali shopping and celebrations.
