In Chittapur, Karnataka, authorities have denied permission for the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to conduct a route march. The decision, made by the Chittapur Town Municipal Council and formally ordered by the Chittapur tahsildar, cites concerns over potential disruptions to peace and law and order. The march was scheduled for Sunday, October 19, 2025.
The council had previously removed RSS cut-outs and banners from the main road, stating they were erected without prior approval for the procession. The tahsildar’s order explicitly mentioned the need to prevent untoward incidents and maintain tranquility in Chittapur, which is the constituency of Minister Priyank Kharge.
Adding to the complexity, the Bhim Army organization has also requested permission to hold a route march along the same route and on the same day. Reports indicate that RSS worker Danesh Naron allegedly made threats against Minister Priyank Kharge, leading to protests across Karnataka. The Bhim Army and the Indian Dalit Panthers have indicated their intention to hold marches, potentially creating a situation where clashes between groups could occur.
This situation has prompted the state government to issue a new order making “prior permission” mandatory for any private organization seeking to use government property or premises. This move follows a cabinet decision influenced by Minister Priyank Kharge’s letter to the Chief Minister advocating for a ban on RSS activities in public spaces.
The tahsildar’s decision to reject the RSS application was based on police reports indicating a high probability of disturbances and adverse effects on law and order if multiple processions were allowed simultaneously on the same route.
