A known offender in Vijayapura district tragically died on Saturday after being shot in the leg by police. The incident occurred in Rampur (PA) village, Sindgi taluk, as the individual allegedly tried to evade arrest by assaulting officers.
The deceased, identified as Younus Iqlas Patel, a 30-year-old resident of Devangaon, Vijayapura, was a “history-sheeter” with a record of serious crimes, including robbery and murder. Police reports indicate that on Friday, Patel had allegedly robbed a man of ₹25,000 at knifepoint and subsequently fled with the victim’s two-wheeler.
Following the robbery, the Gandhi Chowki Station Police immediately launched a comprehensive manhunt. Their investigation led them to Rampur (PA) village, where a police team, led by an inspector, attempted to apprehend Patel.
Superintendent of Police for Vijayapura district, Laxman Nimbaragi, recounted the events: “When our police team moved in to arrest him, the accused violently attacked our personnel, causing injuries. As a primary warning, Inspector Pradeep Talakeri fired two rounds into the air. However, instead of surrendering, Patel charged menacingly towards the inspector. The inspector, in a defensive action, stumbled and fell, and a shot was inadvertently fired, striking the accused in the leg. He was promptly rushed to the taluk hospital in Sindagi for first aid. Given the seriousness of his condition, doctors recommended his immediate transfer to the district hospital in Vijayapura. Tragically, he passed away en route to the district hospital.”
Patel was a notorious criminal, facing two murder charges along with numerous other cases involving attempted murder, robbery, and dacoity.
Mr. Nimbaragi confirmed that the exact cause of death would be determined following a post-mortem examination, and a thorough investigation into the incident is actively underway.
