Jharkhand began their Ranji Trophy Elite Group-A campaign with an emphatic innings and 114-run victory over Tamil Nadu on the fourth day of their first-round encounter at the Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science ground in Coimbatore on Saturday. This decisive win earned Jharkhand a crucial seven points.
The day started with a quick breakthrough for Jharkhand as nightwatcher Hemchudeshan (3) was cleanly bowled by pacer Sahil Raj. The momentum continued to swing in Jharkhand’s favor when B. Indrajith (22) was dismissed by off-spinner Rishav Raj (four for 49) through a spectacular one-handed catch at short leg by Shikhar Mohan, who leapt backward and held on firmly despite falling face down.
A significant 100-run sixth-wicket partnership then blossomed between Andre Siddarth (80 off 180 balls, 12×4) and Shahrukh Khan (37 off 66 balls, 5×4). Shahrukh showcased patience against the spinners, often shouldering arms, but also displayed aggression with two fours off Anukul Roy and a powerful straight drive off Sahil. His resistance eventually ended when he was trapped leg-before by left-arm spinner Anukul Roy.
However, the highlight for Tamil Nadu in an otherwise forgettable match was Andre Siddarth’s magnificent innings. Known for his aggressive stroke-making, Andre demonstrated exceptional self-restraint, showcasing a newfound defensive prowess. His footwork against the spinners was assured, committing firmly to either front or back foot play. His forward block was impenetrable, reminiscent of a barn door slamming shut.
Andre’s innings was a masterclass in controlled aggression, featuring a stunning on-drive, a back-foot straight drive, a step-out cover drive, an imperious aerial cut, a delicate steered cut, an inside-out shot, and two well-timed flicks, all resulting in boundaries. His valiant effort concluded when he missed a slog sweep and was bowled by Anukul, bringing an end to Tamil Nadu’s hopes. Jharkhand then swiftly wrapped up the remaining wickets to seal their comfortable win.
