Guwahati – The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Assam Police has finalized preparations for its visit to Singapore, scheduled to commence on Monday. This trip is a crucial step in the ongoing investigation into the death of renowned cultural figure Zubeen Garg.
A senior official confirmed that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the circumstances surrounding Garg’s demise, which occurred while he was swimming in Singapore on September 19, is diligently working towards submitting its report to the court within the designated period. “Investigation is underway… Statements are being recorded. We are working round-the-clock and the probe is in the right direction,” stated Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta, who is leading the 10-member SIT.
Gupta assured that the SIT would meet the court’s deadline for submitting its report, having previously indicated that the charge-sheet would be filed within 90 days. Regarding the Singapore visit, Gupta, who will be leading the SIT delegation, expressed readiness: “We are prepared for the visit and we will be going as per the schedule of the Singapore authorities, and take forward our investigation.”
In parallel, the SIT has been actively recording statements from individuals connected to Garg. This includes Hitesh Baruah, at whose hospital Garg received his last treatment, and fellow musician Diganta Bharati. Baruah shared that those close to Garg were aware of his epilepsy and the need to keep him away from fire and water. He voiced concerns, suggesting that taking Garg abroad, to the sea, and allowing him to swim were significant misjudgments by his companions.
Zubeen Garg was in Singapore to participate in the 4th North East India Festival when the unfortunate incident took place. To date, the SIT has arrested seven individuals in connection with the case. These include NEIF chief organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg’s manager Siddhartha Sharma, his cousin and state police officer Sandipan, band members Sekharjyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta, and personal security officers Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya. All accused are currently in judicial custody following the conclusion of their police remand.
