Kerala’s renowned Varkala, a jewel in Thiruvananthapuram’s tourism crown, is about to receive a spectacular upgrade. The State’s Tourism department has officially approved a substantial ₹99.94 lakh for the comprehensive beautification of the Varkala Maidanam underpass. This gateway to the popular travel destination is set to become an even more welcoming and visually appealing entrance.
This exciting venture is part of a wider statewide initiative focused on revitalizing public spaces. The government’s innovative design policy guides these projects, aiming to enhance both the aesthetic appeal and practical functionality of underpasses, while also incorporating new recreational facilities for the public.
The approval comes after Varkala MLA V. Joy presented a compelling memorandum to Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas, who oversees both Tourism and Public Works. The Public Works department will take charge of the construction, with a targeted completion timeline of just six months.
The ambitious project promises a significant boost to the area’s charm. Plans include meticulous maintenance of the underpass, installation of improved lighting for enhanced ambiance and safety, and the creation of captivating artwork. These artistic installations will proudly showcase Kerala’s rich culture and heritage. Minister Riyas highlighted that the beautified walls of the Varkala Maidanam underpass are expected to be a major draw, particularly for the international tourists who flock to this beautiful seaside escape.
