Remarkable Recovery: 74-Year-Old Finds New Life After Complex Spinal Surgery at KIMS Kurnool

A 74-year-old woman, who had endured debilitating back pain for many months, has finally found profound relief following a highly intricate spinal surgery at KIMS Hospital in Kurnool. Her suffering had intensified over the years, with pain radiating down her legs, rendering her unable to stand, sit for more than five minutes, or even walk short distances. For the last three months, her condition had deteriorated to the point where she was entirely bedridden, depending solely on a wheelchair for any movement.

The patient, identified as Saalamma from Guntakal, was brought to KIMS Hospital, Kurnool, where Dr. Shaik Mannan, a dedicated Consultant Spine Surgeon, conducted a thorough examination of her severe condition.

Dr. Mannan explained, “Comprehensive diagnostic tests, including detailed MRI scans, revealed that Saalamma was suffering from chronic compression fractures in her D11 and D12 spinal vertebrae. This long-standing issue had progressively worsened, causing significant degeneration in the surrounding areas and resulting in a noticeable spinal deformity.”

Faced with this complex challenge, the medical team at KIMS Hospital opted for an advanced surgical intervention. The intricate procedure, which aimed to correct Saalamma’s spinal deformity, lasted an intensive six hours. During the surgery, a total of 19 titanium dual-threaded screws were meticulously implanted to realign and provide crucial stabilization to her spine.

“The surgery was a success,” Dr. Mannan proudly stated. “We successfully straightened her previously deformed spine, restoring it to a near-normal posture. Remarkably, Ms. Saalamma required a hospital stay of just five days post-operation. The advanced titanium screws implanted are designed to be permanent, carrying no risk of infection, and are fully MRI-compatible. Should the need arise, they can be removed after two years.”

In the aftermath of the surgery, Ms. Saalamma’s improvement has been nothing short of extraordinary. She can now comfortably sit for over an hour without discomfort, and her debilitating leg pain has completely vanished. She is also regaining her independence, able to stand and walk short distances. However, due to the fragility of her bones, doctors have advised against extensive walking for at least two months. Currently, she is diligently undergoing physiotherapy at her home in Guntakal and is on a prescribed medication regimen to enhance her bone strength, paving the way for a full and active life.
