In a remarkable act of courage and quick thinking, an Indian Army soldier stationed near the Arunachal Pradesh-Assam border became an unexpected hero on October 13, saving the life of an eight-month-old baby aboard the Rajdhani Express.
The journey took a frightening turn when the infant suddenly suffered severe respiratory distress and became unresponsive. Panic spread through the compartment, culminating in the baby’s mother fainting, fearing the worst had happened.
Sepoy Sunil, who was traveling back to his base from leave, was in the same coach. He quickly assessed the dire situation, gently picked up the child, and upon examination, found no pulse and no signs of breathing.
Without a moment’s hesitation, Sepoy Sunil carefully laid the infant on a flat surface and began performing pediatric cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Using just two fingers on the baby’s chest and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, he tirelessly worked to revive the tiny life. After two intense cycles of CPR, the baby miraculously showed signs of life, gasping for breath.
Following this life-saving intervention, Sepoy Sunil swiftly coordinated with the train staff and railway police to ensure the infant received immediate medical attention upon arrival at Rangiya station, en route to Dibrugarh.
“His timely and highly professional intervention averted what could have been a tragic fatality in a situation where no immediate medical support was available. Sepoy Sunil exemplified exceptional medical proficiency, sharp judgment, and an outstanding sense of duty, ultimately saving a precious life,” the Ministry of Defence stated in an official announcement on Saturday, October 18, 2025.
