In a notable development for Gujarat politics, Harsh Sanghavi has been sworn in as the state’s Deputy Chief Minister. This appointment comes as part of a major cabinet reshuffle led by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
Sanghavi’s elevation marks the revival of the Deputy Chief Minister post after a gap of nearly four years. The reshuffle saw 19 MLAs inducted as ministers, bringing the total strength of the council of ministers to 26. The swearing-in ceremony was held at Mahatma Gandhi Nagar, with Sanghavi taking the oath alongside the Chief Minister and other ministers.
**Who is Harsh Sanghavi?**
A three-term MLA, Harsh Sanghavi represents the Majura constituency in Surat. He is recognized within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for his sharp political acumen and strong organizational roots. Sanghavi is known to be close to the party’s central leadership. His appointment is seen as a strategic move by the BJP to strengthen its presence in South Gujarat, balancing experienced leadership with emerging young talent.
Sanghavi began his political journey at the age of 15 as a social worker. His early involvement with the Yuva Morcha, the BJP’s youth wing, allowed him to gain experience across the country. In 2012, he was elected as an MLA from Gujarat Assembly with a significant margin, becoming the youngest MLA in the assembly at just 27 years old.
Throughout his tenure, Sanghavi has initiated various community programs, including the ‘Clean Tapi’ initiative and organizing job fairs. He has previously held important ministerial portfolios such as Home, Sports, Youth, and Cultural Activities. His current appointment as Deputy Chief Minister makes him one of the youngest to hold such a significant position in the state’s history.
The revival of the Deputy CM post, previously held by Nitin Patel before it was discontinued in 2021, highlights the BJP’s focus on reinforcing its political base, particularly among urban and youth demographics in South Gujarat.
Among the other ministers sworn in was Rivaba Jadeja, wife of cricketer Ravindra Jadeja.
