Authorities investigating the alleged gang rape of a 23-year-old medical student in Durgapur have brought forth new information, indicating that the survivor was in a relationship with one of the students apprehended in connection with the incident. According to a police officer, sufficient evidence, including WhatsApp communications between the two, has been gathered to support this claim.
The survivor reportedly left the college campus with the accused on October 10, the same day she claims she was sexually assaulted. The individual in question, a classmate hailing from the Malda district, was the last to be arrested. Initially detained on October 11, his arrest followed after investigators identified significant inconsistencies in his statements.
Both the survivor and the accused have reportedly stated that they had planned to meet on the night of the incident. Their accounts suggest they went to a secluded jungle area near a cremation ground. During their time there, they allege that three unknown individuals followed them and subsequently attacked them.
However, the police have noted that the versions of events provided by the accused have been inconsistent, leading investigators to suspect an attempt to mislead the probe.
In addition to the primary accused, five other individuals initially arrested in the case have also been questioned. Police have reportedly conducted face-to-face interrogations and cross-examinations to clarify statements. The crime scene in the forested area has been re-cordoned off for further investigation.
